Hand feed if needed โ sometimes they want the connection, not just the food
Small, frequent meals โ easier to digest than two large ones
Accept when they are done โ refusing food for 3+ days is a sign
โ ๏ธ When to call the vet about eating
If your dog refuses food for more than 48 hours, or is drinking excessively or not at all โ call your veterinarian immediately.
๐ฌ How to Talk to Your Vet About Palliative Care
Many vets default to "heroic measures." You have the right to say no.
Questions to ask your vet:
"What is the expected quality of life with this treatment?"
"Will this extend life or just prolong suffering?"
"What are the signs that it is time to stop treatment?"
"Can we focus on comfort instead of cure?"
"Do you offer in-home euthanasia referrals?"
You are allowed to say no to: surgery with low success rates, chemotherapy for elderly dogs, extended hospital stays, painful procedures with minimal benefit.
๐ A note on guilt
Choosing palliative care does not mean you love your dog less. It means you love them enough to let go of your own need for more time. Miko taught me that. Jiraiya confirmed it.
๐๏ธ The Last Week โ What to Expect
These signs mean the body is beginning to shut down:
Loss of appetite & thirst โ they may refuse even favorite foods
